Sword school program
Welcome to the Band of Iron Lions' programs page! Discover the art of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) and embark on a journey of skill, discipline, and historical knowledge. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced martial artist, our sword school offers a unique and enriching experience.
The Band of Iron Lions specializes in HEMA, with a primary focus on training aspiring students in the art of the longsword. Rooted in the teachings of Johannes Liechtenauer, our curriculum draws from surviving manuscripts, offering a blend of historical accuracy and practical application.
What we teach
We teach the art of the longsword, along with other weapon systems like arming swords, shields, daggers, rapiers, and sabers. Our curriculum balances cutting, thrusting, and defensive capabilities.
Who can participate
We welcome students aged 16 and older, with exceptions considered. Newcomers receive one month of complimentary tuition and access to group equipment.

Indoor Sessions: $50.00 / month
Outdoor Sessions: $30.00 / month

When and where
Practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at First Church of the Open Bible, 2200 Beaver Ave, Des Moines, IA 50310. Check our social media for seasonal outdoor locations.

Beginner Curriculum
New students will learn fundamentals of the Longsword following techniques taught by Johannes Liechtenauer including:
- Parts of a sword
- Footwork
- Cuts and guards
Advanced Curriculum
After completing the beginner curriculum, students will continue their training, honing their techniques by learning Liechtenauer's Secret Meisterhaue and other advanced concepts.
Safety and Weather Policy
Our safety measures
At the Band of Iron Lions, safety and enjoyable learning are our top priorities. Sparring is strictly controlled—full-power strikes are not allowed, and anyone unable to maintain control will be removed.
All participants must wear approved helmets and gloves. We provide helmets in multiple sizes and approved synthetic sparring gloves. Students who have not completed the course are required to use synthetic sword trainers with rounded edges and flexible thrusts to reduce the risk of injury.
Class Cancellation and Weather Policy
Class schedules are subject to change due to various events, holidays, and occasionally, last-minute adjustments due to weather conditions. Please check our Discord and social media channels for updates.
To protect the health and safety of our members, the Band of Iron Lions may cancel practice under the following conditions:

A Heat Advisory, Excessive Heat Watch, or Excessive Heat Warning is in effect and no indoor space is available

Rain is forecast during practice time with no indoor alternative

A Wind Chill, Blizzard, or Winter Storm Warning is issued for the area

Tornadoes, flooding, or other severe weather present an active threat
